- Four sister ships ordered for P&O Bulk Shipping Division from Thyssen Nordseewerke, Emden, West Germany - P&O's largest shipbuilding order to date (£75 million) and the largest yet accepted by the builders. Galconda was the third of the class to be delivered, after Garinda and Galpara and before Garala.

- Named by Frau Betty Wollman, wife of Herr Reiner Wollman, President of Thyssen Nordseewerke, and immediately delivered to Orient Steam Navigation Company Ltd (P&O Bulk Shipping Division, managers). 'Galconda' is a derivation (Ga- for 'gas') from Galconda, the name of a ruined fortress and city now in Andhra Pradesh state, India, previously used by P&O in 1863.
