Four sister ships ordered for P&O Bulk Shipping Division from Thyssen Nordseewerke, Emden, West Germany - P&O's largest shipbuilding order to date (£75 million) and the largest yet accepted by the builders. Galconda was the third of the class to be delivered, after Garinda and Galpara and before Garala.

Named by Frau Betty Wollman, wife of Herr Reiner Wollman, President of Thyssen Nordseewerke, and immediately delivered to Orient Steam Navigation Company Ltd (P&O Bulk Shipping Division, managers). 'Galconda' is a derivation (Ga- for 'gas') from Galconda, the name of a ruined fortress and city now in Andhra Pradesh state, India, previously used by P&O in 1863.

Cargo capacity amended to 54,226 cubic metres (1,915,262 cubic feet).

First P&O bulk ship to carry a woman officer when Cadet Sara Miller was promoted to Third Officer.
