Completed as Rangitata for the New Zealand Shipping Company at a cost of £577,300.

Sailed from Southampton on her first New Zealand sailing to Auckland.
17.07.1930
Rescued the passengers and crew from the burning steamer Targis.

Passenger accommodation updated to 100 first class and 495 tourist class.

Ownership transferred to Federal Steam Navigation company without a change of name.

Requisitioned as a personnel ship with a capacity for 2,600 troops.

Remained on Government charters until 2nd November 1948.

Attacked by enemy aircraft north of Algiers.

Suffered a fire in the galley when bound Auckland to London.

Re-engined with two 6-cylinder 2 SCSA Doxford diesels. Passenger capacity updated to 123 first class and 288 tourist class.

Suffered an engine breakdown and put into Falmouth for repairs.

Suffered a galley fire in the Royal Albert Dock, London.

Suffered an engine breakdown in the Atlantic and repairs were effected at sea.
