Registered as Ganges for The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company at a cost of £58,000.

Maiden voyage Southampton/Constantinople, breaking records for both the Southampton/Malta and Malta/Constantinople legs.

Left Southampton for Calcutta, carrying a detachment of troops to Cape Town in the process.
11.1854
Took on mails for Chusan, disabled at Singapore.
1856
Proposed to fit new boilers and convert her to screw propulsion but the work was not carried out.
1857
Gross tonnage re-stated as 1,190 grt.

Having arrived at Galle bound Hong Kong to Bombay, was directed to collect passengers, mail and specie landed from Bengal which had run aground and take them to Calcutta.

Arrived at Calcutta, then proceeded coastwise to Bombay to rejoin her normal service.
