Point de Galle painted here in 1846 was an important transhipment and coaling port for P&O. An entry in the P&O Board Minutes for 30th June 1848 records "Mr. Nicholls sends 6 watercolour drawings of principal ports visited by the Company's steamers from Southampton to Ceylon in return for free passage granted to his wife in August 1846."
