A full hull craftsman’s miniature model. It is one of our smallest models (close to 1:400 scale), measuring just under 50cm in length.
Made of wood with exquisite miniature details in wood, metal and thin cotton thread rigging.
The model was made by Tommy Dring, a seafarer working for the P&O between 1935 -1948. Tommy prided himself of being the only person in the Company to simultaneously hold the position of the ship’s musician and company model maker.
Tommy was posted to different ships specifically to make a model of them. He was an enthusiastic model maker and made nearly 20 models of P&O ships, of which 4 remain in the collection today.
The VICEROY OF INDIA model was on display in the P&O Museum at Leadenhall Street, London as early as the 1960s.
