- Acquired by the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand and renamed Wairata.

- Switched to the New Zealand/Malaysia/Bangladesh/India/Sri Lanka/Pakistan service with some calls at Indonesia.

- Involved in a collision with the Rangitane at Auckland.

- Sent to Vancouver to have refrigeration installed.

- On a passage from Auckland to Singapore, she took in tow the disabled tanker British Yeoman and in seven days managed to tow her 2,140km (1,325 miles) to Singapore.
