Delivered as Coromandel to The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. She was the second of two sisters; Cannanore was completed three months earlier.

Carried 187 buffalo as deck cargo on a voyage from Bangkok to Hong Kong. All survived except one that jumped overboard and drowned shortly before docking.

Management and operation transferred to P&O-Orient Lines.
1966
Managers and operators restyled P&O Lines.

Sold to Jebshun Shipping Co Ltd, Hong Kong and renamed Shun Hing though London registry was retained.
