- Handed over as Mapourika for Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand at a cost of £34,553. She was designed for the Wellington/Nelson/Westport/Greymouth service.
- 01.10.1898
- Went ashore on the seaward side of the North Tiphead at Greymouth. In order to salvage the vessel it was necessary to virtually slide her over the breakwater and re-launch her into the river. Nearly 100 men spent 4 months in preparation and she was successfully re-launched 10 March 1899.

- Transferred to the Wellington/Lyttelton service.

- Ran aground off Picton.

- Suffered damage off Pencarrow.

- Stranded in the French Pass.

- Sold to the Anchor Shipping & Foundry Ltd (another P&O subsidiary and thus she did not leave P&O Group service). She was renamed Ngaio for the Nelson/Wellington overnight service and registered at Nelson.
