- Unaware that war had broken out she was stopped in the English Channel by HMS Vindictive and taken as a war prize.

- Sold at auction by the Admiralty Marshall to Wm Thomas & Sons, London. She was renamed Maritime of the Maritime Steamship Co, London. Finally she was acquired by the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand and renamed Waikawa.

- Takeover of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand by The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company agreed.

- On a passage from Rouen to Barry Dock in ballast, she was torpedoed by UB31 6½km (4 miles) off Start Point, English Channel.
